Knicks Bulletin: “We will talk to the doctor first”

The day has come and Thibs won’t keep Knicks fans waiting any longer: It’s preseason and with New York’s debut coming later Sunday in North Carolina in a game against the Charlotte Hornets, the world will get to see Karl-Anthony Town’s touch Her first basketball with orange and blue threads.

The Knicks spent the first part of training camp in Charleston, S.C., and will begin their five-game exhibition tour today before facing former Wizards team and KAT in a week.

Here’s the latest we’ve heard from Tom Thibodeau and several other Knickerbockers before watching them play fake basketball for the first time in months.

Tom Thibodeau

On the Knicks’ plan for their first preseason game:

“Just get a baseline. I haven’t finished everything yet, but there are usually a few starter sections and trying to take a look at a lot of different things.

On the question of whether or not Karl-Anthony Towns will play against the Hornets:

“We will talk to medicine first and see where (Cities) is. I think he wants to play and he’s done his best so far, so we’ll see where he wants to go today.”

To prepare for the season:

“We basically treat the whole month as a training camp. The next phase will be the first exhibition game that is not a regular season game. “Let’s set a baseline there too.” So we got the camp where we saw where we were as far as conditioning and things like that.

“Then how do we get out of this? ‘OK, now let’s start incorporating the games.’ And then you improve in every game, until the last game where you really want your rhythm and your rotation.”

On Landry Shamet’s performance in training camp:

“I don’t make the final decision (on signing a standard contract with Shamet), but I base (my opinion) on what (Shamet) did on the ground. He did really well.

“I’m also excited about the second unit (Shamet above) because I’ve seen what they’ve done in practice and they’ve done a really good job as a unit. So I want to see that in a game situation. But he did a really good job.

“He has really good chemistry with (Cameron Payne), and then when you add Deuce (Miles McBride) into the mix, they are very fast. You can play with a lot of speed.”

On the Knicks’ second unit rotation:

“I think it will be a very strong unit for us.”

On the Knicks’ roster and Brock Aller’s masterful cap management:

“Brock was great. It was a great execution of a plan. The development took five years. It’s about accumulating the draft capital, looking at the options, taking it step by step and figuring out what you can do. And it’s not easy. It is your immediate plan and also your future plan.

“You have to look at it in almost three different ways. What does the basketball standpoint mean for what’s on the floor? Added to this are the financial implications. Then there is the punitive aspect that also needs to be taken into account. So, before you make a decision, you need to look into all three things in depth. So they did a great job.”

Jalen Brunson

On acclimating new players like Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges:

“I just feel like it’s going to be a learning process.

“Every day will be a challenge for us to get better. It won’t be perfect from day one, but as long as we have the right attitude we will continue to improve.”

On Brock Aller’s work making the current Knicks possible:

“(Everyone) is doing a great job on his part. We applaud him for that and we just have to go out there and do our part on the floor.”

Karl Anthony cities:

On building chemistry with his new teammates:

“I think it’s important for all of us to play together on these days in training camp for the camaraderie and continuity.

“Every day I see us making better and better plays, so we’re doing a good job at the moment. The goal will be the same every night: win the game, find a way to contribute to the success of this team and be the best teammate I can be.

“Game 1 will be the same as Game 82, just go out there and be the best version of myself.”
