Klamath County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive complaints about phone scams

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive complaints from citizens who have been victims of phone scams or have been contacted by scammers attempting to trick them into disclosing personal or financial information over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office issues alerts regularly and countless attempts have been thwarted as the public becomes increasingly aware of attempts to steal private and personal information. Today alone we received two alerts from citizens who were not fooled.

As with previous scam calls, today’s caller posed as a police deputy or supervisor calling to collect a reported fine or failure to appear for jury duty. The scammer used the names of real police officers and their phone number on the caller ID appeared to be real. There are methods to trick the caller ID into displaying a false number. Please do not fall for these theft attempts. The attempts are often very convincing…please just hang up.

The Sheriff’s Office does not call or attempt to obtain personal and financial information from citizens in order to pay fines, avoid arrest, or prevent the issuance of an arrest warrant.

If you would like more information about phone scams and how to avoid them, research the topic in any popular web browser. You will find a wealth of information there.
