Kim’s Convenience star Andrea Bang lands next leading role in cinema

Andrea Bang, the star of “Kim’s Convenience,” will star in the upcoming gambling drama “Surrender” alongside Keiko Agena of “Gilmore Girls.”

Bang, known for her role as Janet Kim in the Canadian sitcom, will play protagonist Naomi in “Surrender” and will also serve as an executive producer. Writer and director Jess Dang makes her directorial debut on the film (via Deadline).

Bangs Naomi is a young Asian-American woman who seeks to escape past trauma and delves into the world of blackjack to regain a sense of control. She soon becomes addicted to gambling and struggles to balance her successful, beautiful personality at her day job with her secret identity as a high-limit blackjack player.

“Her gambling addiction plunges her into a secret cycle of shame as she suppresses her inner feelings in order to appear healthy on the outside, which affects her mental health,” the synopsis continues.

The same concept was the focus of a 2021 short film that also featured Bang and Agena.

In addition to her appearance on “Kim’s Convenience,” which ran for five seasons until it was canceled in 2021, Bang has appeared in the family series “A Million Little Things,” the horror film “Fresh” with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, and the romantic drama “Float” with Robbie Amell of “Upload,” which hit theaters just a few days ago.

On Instagram, Bang looked back on filming the movie with Amell and joked that filming was made difficult by insects trying to sneak into scenes.

“I did this with incredibly talented people… and insects. In the scene above, a family of wasps tried to get into the film. Maybe you’ll see Sandy?” she wrote on February 11.

“And once I find the photos I took on set, I’ll upload them too so you can see the amazing souls who made the whole thing so much fun. I hope you enjoy!”

“Kim’s Convenience” is available to stream on Netflix in the UK.
