LEXINGTON – Kerr Kriisa did not participate in Kentucky basketball’s new-look Blue-White preseason event on Oct. 18 at Memorial Coliseum. He, too, was on the UK bench five days later when the preseason opened with a 71-point win over Kentucky Wesleyan in a home exhibition.

Kriisa’s nagging hamstring injury finally healed enough for him to take the floor in last week’s exhibition win over Minnesota State Mankato. Kriisa, a fifth-year senior guard, played 16 minutes, scored three points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out six assists — and no turnovers.

But as Kentucky prepares for its opening game of 2024-25 — it will be Mark Pope’s debut as coach of the Wildcats — tonight against Wright State, Kerr’s preseason reps (or lack thereof) have never been a problem.

“He’s a vet,” Pope said. “He started on great teams for two and a half years in Arizona and started a full season in the Big 12 last year. So it’s not like we’re putting a rookie out there.”

However, Pope found a reason why Kerr’s performance last week was crucial.

“The challenge for our guys is, ‘Can you keep up?’ correct? Kerr is racing across the floor so fast he’s like, ‘Where’s everyone caught up, guys?'” Pope said. “And that’s something we need. So it was nice to see and feel that. And our guys are going to really, really enjoy playing with him.”
