Kayla Harrison’s wins set up title shot

Kayla Harrison won a unanimous decision over Ketlen Vieira to open the pay-per-view portion of UFC 307. The win represented a challenging moment for Harrison in the second round, but the win sets the former Professional Fighters League champion up for an opportunity for the UFC women’s bantamweight title.

Harrison’s wrestling and the skills she honed during her years as a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo made the difference. Vieira had some success in the second round as she stayed off the ground for extended periods.

Vieira used an elbow to open a gash on Harrison’s forehead in the center of a golf ball-sized hematoma. Harrison said it was the first time she had ever bled in a fight as a professional mixed martial artist.

Harrison cemented her dominance in the third round by taking Vieira to the ground and controlling the Brazilian on the ground. Harrison did plenty of damage from the top position, eliminating any doubt as to which woman was the better fighter.

After the fight, Harrison warned Raquel Pennington and Julianna Pena. Pennington defends her title against Pena in the co-main event, and Harrison announced she’s gunning for the winner in search of her second title in as many promotions.

If Harrison completes her mission, she will become the first fighter to win a UFC and PFL title. Last week, PFL owner Donn Davis expressed his disappointment with Harrison’s decision to move to the UFC rather than stay with the promotion where she began her career.

In the promotion, Harrison had fights against Larissa Pacheco and Cris Cyborg. However, in her post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Harrison said that she came to the UFC because it was the best organization with the best fighters. She will have the chance to prove that she belongs in her next fight.
