Katie Ledecky selected as US flag bearer for closing ceremony in Paris

9x Olympic champion Katie Ledecky has been named the U.S. flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. She is the third U.S. swimmer ever selected as a flag bearer for the opening or closing ceremonies.

Ledecky will be the flag bearer alongside rower Nick Mead, who was selected as the men’s flag bearer. Mead won gold in the coxless four.

Ledecky just finished her 4th Olympics, notably winning the 8th and 9th Olympic gold medals of her career. She won the 800m freestyle, becoming the first woman to win a pool event at four Olympics. The only other swimmer to ever win four titles in one event is Michael Phelps who achieved this in the men’s 200 m individual medley.

Her historic week also includes her ranking 2nd all-time in gold medals in any sport. The only person to ever win more gold medals is Phelps with 23.

Ledecky is now the third swimmer to ever serve as flag bearer for the United States. Phelps was flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics and Gary Hall was flag bearer at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The closing ceremony is scheduled to begin on August 11 at 9 p.m. local time in Paris (3 p.m. EST) and end at midnight local time (6 p.m. EST).
