Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza from “Agatha All Along” exchanged music and poems before filming their first “lively” scene: “All the concentrated energy really benefited us”

In the brand new Disney Plus show “Agatha All Along,” Agatha Harkness, Kathryn Hahn’s recurring WandaVision star, recruits a not-so-merry band of misfit witches to join her on a journey down the infamous Witch Road.

One of those members is Aubrey Plaza’s new addition Rio Vidal, described simply as a “warrior witch” who joins Agatha’s coven. To say more would spoil the surprises to come…

What we can say, however, is that the two have a shared past, which comes to light in a particularly heated scene in the first episode when the two clash after Agatha is freed from Wanda’s curse.

Speaking to GamesRadar+ and the Inside Total Film podcast, Hahn revealed that she and Plaza kept their distance from each other before filming this scene so that the energy could be released when they met on set. The only thing they did beforehand was send each other music and poems.

As Hahn also tells us, this project was very different from the previous show she and Plaza had starred in together: “That scene was very, very spirited. We know each other from Parks and Recreation, but we’d never had a chance to work together. We were like ships in the night. The women from Parks and Recreation are some of my closest friends though, so we met up often in private. But working with her on something like this was a whole other level.

“It was so much fun! We didn’t really talk about it. We sent each other music and poems, but we stayed in our corners until it was time to shoot the scenes, so all that concentrated energy really benefited us.”

When we ask Hahn for more information about the kind of music and poems the couple exchanged, she simply adds: “It was just stuff that unconsciously or consciously had the right mood for the story of this relationship. They obviously have a very long and complicated history.”

Hahn goes on to say that because of their previous friendship, the two didn’t have to put a lot of work into developing a relationship because it already existed. She concludes, “We just didn’t really talk about it, it was just there. There was a deep history from the second we shot our first scene, so we didn’t have to think about it too much. It was just there.”

Agatha All Along premieres with a double episode on Disney Plus on September 18 in the US and September 19 in the UK. You can hear our full interview with Hahn on the next episode of the Inside Total Film podcast, available on various platforms.
