Kamala Harris’ coconut tree meme has resurfaced – Viral quote explained

Vice President Kamala Harris’ “coconut tree” quote continues to take over social media.

After President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign on July 21 and endorsed Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate, a speech by Harris from last year resurfaced in the form of memes, including the line, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”

But why does it go viral – and what is the context?

First, some background on Kamala Harris’ “coconut tree” quote that went viral: In May 2023, the Vice President delivered a speech at the swearing-in ceremony of the commissioners of the White House Initiative to Advance Educational Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics.

In her speech, Harris stressed that it is important not only to focus on the younger generation, but also to “be aware of the needs of their parents, grandparents, teachers and communities.”

She further said that “none of us live in a silo” and shared some wise words from her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan.

“My mother would sometimes give us a hard time and say, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?'” Harris said, laughing.

“You exist in the context of everything you live in and everything that came before you,” she continued.

Her “coconut tree” quote eventually became a meme, most recently resurfacing after Biden announced on July 21 that he would not seek re-election this year and endorsed Harris to succeed him as the Democratic presidential nominee.

References to coconut trees have been appearing online, shared by Harris supporters, including some Democratic politicians.

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) shared a photo of a man climbing a coconut tree on X, along with the message: “Madam Vice President, we are ready to help.”

Colorado Governor Jared Polis appeared to reference the meme on X on July 21, sharing a post that included the coconut and palm tree emoji, as well as an American flag symbol.

Anderson Clayton, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party, also participated.

“We all fell from the coconut tree into a gym full of Democrats today!!!!” she wrote on X, sharing photos from an event with Harris.

The coconut tree meme has also inspired a lot of creativity on social media, with people creating remixes of the resurfaced moment from her 2023 speech, setting it to music, and some performing the viral TikTok dance to Charli XCX’s song “Apple.”

Others have shared parodies of the X meme, with some relying on pop culture references.

Someone incorporated the coconut tree meme into a “Sex and the City” parody — and also included a reference to Charli XCX’s “Brat Summer,” which the Harris campaign seems to be referencing with its lime green banner with the X profile.

“And so the brat’s summer turned into fall for Joey again. And I had to ask myself… did we all just fall out of a coconut tree?” posted the X-user.

Another X-user shared a still from the “Barbie” movie showing a pink white house with tropical trees in front of it.

“Are those… coconut trees?” wrote the X-user.

Another person honored Harris’ “coconut tree” quote by creating a hypothetical conversation between Lord of the Rings characters Frodo and Gandalf.

A user on X shared a photo of Miranda Priestly, who played Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, modifying a famous line from the film and replacing it with coconut tree speak.

“Did you fall from the coconut tree and hit your little head on everything you live in and what came before you?” is the headline of the X-post.

Someone else reinterpreted Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous quote about the “arc of the moral universe,” writing, “The arc of the coconut tree is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Several bars in Washington, D.C., also capitalized on the viral moment by offering Kamala Harris coconut tree drinks, The New York Times reported. A bar and nightclub called Bunker, for example, offered “Piña Kamala” coconut shots for $5 all night long on July 21.

In addition, some social media users seem to view Harris’ campaign as “Operation Coconut Tree.”

Even Harris’ campaign team itself seemed to get the joke. The official X-site of Harris’ presidential campaign, Kamala HQ, appears to reference Harris’ “coconut tree” quote in its two-word bio: “Provide context.”
