Justin Timberlake’s agreement includes a $500 fine and community service

Justin Timberlake’s drunk driving case was settled with a deal on Friday.

The 43-year-old musician appeared with his attorney Edward Burke Jr. for a hearing at the courthouse in Sag Harbor, NY on September 13 after a settlement was reached in his drunken driving case.

Addressing Sag Harbor Village Judge Carl Irace, Timberlake told the judge that he has tried throughout his life to hold himself to the “highest possible standard” and that given the “time to reflect” since his arrest in June, he is “in a position of disappointment” with himself.

He told the court that he would like to “take a moment to express his gratitude to everyone involved,” adding that, having grown up in a small town, he understands “the strain this can place on local resources.”

“I didn’t live up to my own standards,” Timberlake told Irace. “I was in a situation where I should have taken a moment. I understand and appreciate the gravity of the situation.”

Irace thanked the musician for his speech and then presented him with the terms of the deal: Timberlake must make a public announcement, pay a $500 fine plus a $260 surcharge, complete 25 hours of community service, and have his driver’s license suspended for 90 days.

It was previously reported that Timberlake agreed to plead guilty to a lesser offense after initially being charged with drunk driving. A source close to the star told PEOPLE he did so to put the legal drama behind him.

“He’s a family man and that’s his focus. He accepted a deal because he wants to move on,” the source said. “The court case was a distraction. He doesn’t want his family affected by this.”

The “Selfish” singer – who is married to actress Jessica Biel (42) and has sons Silas (9) and Phineas (4) with her – was arrested on June 18 in Sag Harbor, New York, and charged with drunk driving. He also received two tickets for ignoring a stop sign and failing to stay in his lane.

According to the police report, an officer allegedly saw Timberlake’s 2025 BMW run a stop sign and “fail to stay on the right side of the road.” After initiating a traffic stop, the officer noticed that Timberlake’s “eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his breath gave off the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage… and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”

Burke has claimed in court that Timberlake was “not drunk” when he was arrested. He had filed a motion to dismiss the case in July, but withdrew it during a hearing in August when the musician pleaded not guilty at a virtual hearing from Antwerp, Belgium.

During the hearing in August, the singer was also banned from driving in New York State for one year because he refused to take a breathalyzer test after his arrest at police headquarters – which, according to his lawyer, is “standard for any driving under the influence of alcohol.”

The 10-time Grammy winner is currently on his “Forget Tomorrow World Tour,” which a source told PEOPLE is “also his priority.” Another insider said he and his wife have “put the arrest behind them” and are focusing on their respective projects.

Timberlake will continue touring until June 2025. His next concert is scheduled for September 28 in Newark, NJ.
