Newly crowned two-time UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña revealed that she is not focused on a fight against former mainstay Kayla Harrison – at least not yet.

Peña defeated former champion Raquel Pennington by split decision in the co-main event of UFC 307 on Saturday night. Despite struggling to score points in Round 1 and being knocked out in Round 4, Peña earned her first win since an upset in December In 2021 against then-champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 269. Peña was injured for part of last year, which led to Pennington earning a vacant title shot against Mayra Bueno Silva in January.

Although Harrison improved to 2-0 at No. 3 in the UFC with a unanimous decision over Ketlen Vieira, in which she used her wrestling, ground-and-pound and relentless pace to frustrate the Brazilian, she was no match Peña’s standards. In her Octagon post-fight interview, Peña called for a trilogy fight with Nunes, who defeated Peña in a rematch at UFC 277 in 2022. Nunes retired last summer after a win at UFC 289 against Irene Aldana, Peña’s successor.

After Peña won, she sent her message to Nunes on a split screen alongside Harrison, who many in the MMA community believe has a shot at the title in their next fight.

“To be honest, I tell you, I was warming up and focused on my own fight,” Peña said when asked about watching Harrison win. “But other than that, I had my trainers there watching the fight (and) giving me a 4-1-1 assessment of what was going on. We are not impressed. She said she would put an elbow through her skull and she would do all this damage. The girl didn’t have a scratch. It was boring and she didn’t do anything that fell off the page, like, “Oh, the bogeyman.” You know what I mean? So I definitely wasn’t impressed, especially when I heard from my team.

It remains uncertain what the UFC will do regarding the future of the women’s bantamweight division, but for now, Peña’s title reign is the priority.
