Joy Behar interviews Sara Haines about lesbian relationships on The View

Joy Behar just experienced perhaps the wildest Joy Behar moment of the year The view‘s latest live broadcast.

In the closing moments of the show’s wild Hot Topics day on Wednesday, 82-year-old comedian Whoopi interrupted Goldberg’s plug for co-host Sara Haines’ upcoming appearance on the show Behind the table Companion podcast to ask a question about your colleague’s romantic past with another woman.

“It’s crazy, but Sara is on the podcast today with her amazing parents who are here with us today,” Goldberg said as the show’s camera cut to a shot of Haines’ parents sitting in the studio audience before Behar cut in.

“I have to ask her a question,” Behar interrupted. “Are you going to bring up the lesbian relationship you said you had back at Smith (College)?”

Haines and her co-hosts appeared taken aback by the question. Haines looked at her parents and said, “Dad, earmuffs! Earmuffs!”

Alyssa Farah Griffin reminded Behar, “That was off-air for her to tell us,” before Sunny Hostin remarked, “Now it’s on the air!”

Haines tried to move on from that moment, joking, “It’s a good thing my dad isn’t always watching.”

Weekly entertainment reached out to a representative The view for a comment.

The moment came after a previous segment in which the co-hosts debated whether it was appropriate to remain in friendly contact with former romantic partners, with Haines admitting that she had recently tried to get in touch with one of her exes.

In 2016, Haines established herself as a community icon when she discussed her involvement in a gay volleyball league with her gay brother.

“I attended left-leaning Smith College and once replaced my brother, who is gay, on an all-gay New York volleyball team and never left the league,” she told TV Insider. “So now I have more gay friends than straight friends. When you put it all together, I’m left somewhere in the middle. I am a melting pot of beliefs.”

Haines, 47, is currently married to Max Shifrin and the couple has three children together.

The view airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
