Jordyn Tyson snatches two late touchdowns after missed throws to put Arizona State football over Kansas

TEMPE – Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson caught two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, overcoming first-half errors in a 35-31 win over Kansas on Saturday at Mountain America Stadium.

Although it only lasted 14 seconds to start the second half, there were five lead changes in the final quarter as Tyson cashed in the Sun Devil’s final two scores with 32-yard and 3-yard touchdown grabs.

With 2:04 left, ASU relied heavily on the ground attack, setting up seven straight runs on quarterback Sam Leavitt’s only pass to Tyson.

Tyson’s game didn’t start off so well. He fumbled in Kansas territory in the second quarter and later saw a tipped pass go to the Jayhawks for an interception before making amends later.

ASU running back Cam Skattebo also played a crucial role, making several long-range runs to keep the Sun Devil’s hopes alive. He didn’t quite match his 262-yard performance in a 30-23 win over Mississippi State, but the senior managed 186 yards on 25 carries. A fourth-quarter gain of 39 yards tied a season high (also against Mississippi State) and Skattebo had six carries for more than 10 yards on a productive day.

Redshirt freshman Leavitt threw four touchdowns on 14 of 24 passes, a career-best, and accounted for 157 yards. He also had success with his legs: Leavitt rushed for a career-high 77 yards on 10 carries, including 18 yards on the game-winning drive.

The Sun Devils strolled down the field and scored the first seven plays for 75 yards when Leavitt hit wide receiver Xavier Guillory from 28 yards out. ASU has now scored a touchdown on its opening drive in four of its first five games.

Taking this game into account, Kansas has led in the fourth quarter in five of its six games. The Jayhawks had won eight straight without committing a turnover before Saturday.

The kickoff temperature of 107 degrees in Tempe was the hottest since 2000. ASU played in record-breaking heat for the first time in October, like any event in late August or early September.

Arizona State (4-1, 1-1) will now shift its focus to the Utes (4-1, 1-1) as they host their third Big 12 opponent of the season on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
