‘Joker 2’ U.S. Box Office Update: Sequel Set to Score Historical Biggest Drop Record Ever | Hollywood

Oct 14, 2024, 2:05 PM IST

After a weak opening weekend, “Joker: Folie a Deux” plunged 81% in its second week.

Joker: Folie a Deux continued its historic decline in the second week since its release following its flop opening weekend. Compared to its predecessor from 2019, which was a huge success with fans and critics, the film has not yet been released in cinemas. Before its release, the film was considered one of the most anticipated films of the year, alongside films like Deadpool and Wolverine.

Joker 2 fails in its second week

The film grossed $38 million at the U.S. box office on its opening weekend, well below the $50 million to $70 million forecast. But the second week proved brutal for the sequel, as it only grossed $7 million from 4,102 theaters in the US. This represents an 81% decline, the largest decline in the history of a film based on a comic book. It also ranks among the steepest domestic declines for a film.

That drop earned the film a spot in the top 20 biggest second weekend declines of all time, according to Boc Office Mojo, which has been tracking box office data since 1982. Previously, The Marvels saw its biggest drop on record released on 23, seeing a 78% drop in its second week, as The Guardian reported.

Global box office update for Joker 2

The Joaquin Phoenix-starring film grossed $165 million at the global box office, far from covering its $200 million budget. In comparison, Joker was made on a third of the sequel’s budget and grossed $248.4 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The first film’s total worldwide box office revenue was $1 billion and it set the record for being the first R-rated film to achieve this. The 2019 film was also the highest-grossing R-rated film until this year, but was later replaced by Deadpool and Wolverine.

Joker 2, which is largely a musical, failed to impress critics as they described it as “dull” and “frighteningly boring.” The film stars Phoenix as Joker/Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
