Joey Chestnut beats Takeru Kobayashi in the “Unfinished Beef” rematch

The competitive eater also broke his own world record by eating 83 Glizzies

Hot Diggity Dog: Joey Chestnut is a winner again! On Monday, Chestnut won his hot dog eating contest against Takeru Kobayashi by eating 83 hot dogs and buns, beating his previous world record of 76. He beat Kobayashi, who only ate 66 Glizzies.

“Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef,” which aired on Netflix and took place at the HyperX Arena at the Luxor in Las Vegas, marked the first time in 15 years that the two competitive eaters faced off in a hot dog eating contest.

Kobayashi won the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest six times in the early 2000s, but hasn’t competed since 2009 because he refused to sign an exclusive contract with event organizer Major League Eating. Since then, Chestnut has dominated his glittering field of eaters, winning the contest every year between 2007 and 2023, except for 2015, when he lost to Matt Stonie.

“In all my years of competitive eating, Kobayashi is my biggest rival,” Chestnut previously said in a statement about the “Unfinished Beef” competition. “Competing against him has made me want to be that much better. I know the fans have been waiting a long time for a new chapter in our rivalry, and I can’t wait for our big showdown live on Netflix! It’s time to give the people what they want!”

The confrontation came several months after Chestnut was disqualified from this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest under controversial circumstances after signing a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, which sells plant-based hot dogs.

The organization’s statement also mentioned the then-unannounced Netflix rematch with Kobayashi: “MLE and Nathan’s have made great efforts to accommodate Joey and his management team over the past few months, agreeing to the entry fee and allowing Joey to participate in a competitive unbranded hot dog eating contest on Labor Day. However, it appears that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with another hot dog brand over our long-standing relationship.”
