Joey Chestnut beats Kobayashi and sets new world record in Netflix hot dog eating contest

Joey Chestnut mustered all his strength and devoured a world record 83 hot dogs on Monday, celebrating another victory over rival Takeru Kobayashi, who struggled to keep up with the world’s best competitive eater in their Labor Day showdown for Netflix’s Unfinished Beef title.

Following the same format as the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, New York, Chestnut and Kobayashi had 10 minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. According to host Rob Riggle, production had prepared 300 hot dogs in advance of the event, which were streamed live on Netflix from the Hyper X Arena in Las Vegas.

Contestants were not allowed to dip or pour water on the hot dogs or remove the beef sausages from their buns. Excessive crumbs and burping were penalized. While Kobayashi could only eat 67 hot dogs, Chestnut managed 83, beating his own world record of 76 set at the 2021 Nathan’s competition.

“I’ve been trying to do 80 hot dogs for years. I never could have done it without Kobayashi. He pushes me. We haven’t always been nice to each other, but I love what he can do. We push each other to do our best,” Chestnut said on stage after the win.

“I feel like I’ve done everything I could,” Kobayashi replied through an interpreter. The Nagano, Japan native announced his retirement from competitive eating earlier this year in the Netflix documentary “Hack Your Health: Secrets of Your Gut,” in which he also revealed he no longer feels hungry.

Kobayashi held the Nathan title from 2001 to 2006 before Chestnut took the throne and won 16 times in 17 years. Chestnut was excluded from the competition this year about its partnership agreement with Impossible Foods, Loss of the “Mustard Belt” to Patrick Bertoletti.

Netflix’s next planned live event is Jake Paul’s boxing showdown against Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
