Joe Mazzulla shares his thoughts on Lonnie Walker ahead of the Celtics’ big decision

BRIGHTON – The Boston Celtics waived three players on Thursday – Jay Scrubb, Ron Harper Jr. and Hason Ward. All three had contracts with Exhibit 10 and the move came shortly after the team parted ways with Dmytro Skapintsev. Those four will likely all spend a lot of time in Maine this year, and now Boston only has one Exhibit 10 guy left on the roster – Lonnie Walker IV.

As outlined by Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Celtics have until Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time to make a decision or they will be hit with a tax/cap per day for each day he is on the roster . That may not seem like much, but for a team that has already hit the $500 million roster mark, even a little something at the end of the roster is justified.

But as this difficult decision looms, Boston’s appreciation for Walker remains.

After the Celtics practice on Friday, head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Walker and the work he did in training camp.

“He had a great training camp,” Mazzulla said. “I liked his attitude. I liked his work performance. I thought he really got used to our defensive system and I thought he really worked on studying the offensive system and kind of getting into it. I thought he made the most of the time he had and that’s really all you could ask for.”

In Abu Dhabi, Walker struggled to find his shot as he only had a few minutes at the end of each game. But when the Celtics came back to the United States, he found his rhythm.

Against the Philadelphia 76ers, Walker showed impressive playing skills. He did a great job of operating in the flow of the attack and setting his teammates up for success.

Then, against the Toronto Raptors, he unleashed his inner basket. Walker was a flamethrower, scoring 20 points on 15 shots. His three-pointer even looked solid as he shot 4-9 from distance.

However, if the Celtics decide to sign him to the final roster spot, it would cost them $11 million (including taxes). They would also enter the next level of tax penalties.

Wyc Grousbeck hasn’t been afraid to spend money in recent years, but spending on a 15th man who probably won’t see the floor much might be too expensive even for his tastes.

Regardless, Walker has impressed during his time in Boston, so the Celtics have a very difficult decision to make.
