Joaquin Phoenix drops out of Todd Haynes’ upcoming gay film

Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly dropped out of Todd Haynes’ next, as-yet-untitled film, about two gay lovers played by Phoenix and co-star Danny Ramirez. The reason? “Cold feet,” said a source. diversity.

The report highlights that Phoenix dropped out of the project just five days before filming was scheduled to begin in Mexico. “Phoenix had developed the script for the detective love story with Haynes and Jon Raymond,” the publication says. “Complete sets were already being built in Guadalajara before Phoenix made the last-minute decision to drop out of the film.”

Given Phoenix’s name recognition and star status, Haynes’ upcoming film depended on which actor would play the lead role. In other words, this project was effectively abandoned after Phoenix’s departure.

“The crew is now unemployed and those involved in the film still have to be paid. The losses could exceed a seven-figure amount,” diversity reported, adding that Phoenix’s role in the film apparently “cannot be recast.”

In May 2023, Haynes announced that this upcoming gay film would receive an NC-17 rating – the highest rating for theatrical productions in the Motion Picture Association (MPA) ratings system.

“The next film is a feature film with an original screenplay that I developed together with Joaquin Phoenix, based on some thoughts and ideas that he presented to me,” said the director IndieWire last year. “We basically wrote with him as storywriter. Jon Raymond, Joaquin and I share the story. We hope to start shooting early next year (2024). It’s a gay love story set in 1930s LA.”

Haynes also hinted that Phoenix would “keep pushing the director,” which led to the project being rated NC-17. And yet, here we are.

“There is speculation among staff that Phoenix’s exit had something to do with the explicit nature of the film’s sex scenes,” diversity added. “But that theory is confusing to some sources, who reiterate that it was Phoenix who brought the project – and its NC-17 concept – to Haynes in the first place.”

Girl, so confusing. We hope these two can nail it in the remix.
