Jim Montgomery gives an insightful update on Jeremy Swayman

It may not be long before Bruins fans see Jeremy Swayman back in the Black and Gold.

Swayman missed all of training camp due to a contract dispute. That dispute came to a decisive end on Sunday when the B’s announced a new eight-year, $66 million contract extension for their No. 1 goaltender. Shortly after putting pen to paper, Swayman boarded the team plane and headed to Sunrise, Fla., ahead of the B’s season opener Tuesday against the Panthers.

Surely he was all about supporting his teammates, right? There’s no way the goalkeeper – after missing the last few weeks – could be ready for the final change, is there?

Well, maybe.

Bruins coach Jim Montgomery told reporters Monday in Florida that Swayman is a “possibility” to start Game No. 1 for the B’s, as relayed by Jim McBride of The Boston Globe.

That would be a major turn of events considering everything that has happened so far. Montgomery even admitted a week ago that all signs pointed to Joonas Korpisalo starting the opener while Swayman’s contract was in limbo.

“Where we are right now with camp, how well camp has gone and how good of a job Korpisalo has right now (Korpisalo will be our starter for Game 1,” Montgomery said in an Oct. 1 press conference.

In retrospect, the words “right now” play a big role in this sentence.

Even if Swayman isn’t between the pipes on Tuesday night, the fact that he’s even a “possibility” bodes well for the short-term prospects of returning early in the season. Swayman has worked with the Boston University ice hockey team and appears to be on the right track with his entry.

If he’s a possibility on Tuesday, one might assume he’s even more likely in Thursday’s home opener against Montreal, which would cause quite a scene at TD Garden.
