Jill Biden recognizes President Biden’s achievements and supports Harris at the DNC opening

Jill Biden once said she knew that marrying Joe Biden, then a senator from Delaware, would mean “a life in the spotlight that I never wanted.”

On Monday night, the first lady, now accustomed to the spotlight, will address the Democratic National Convention and do her part to honor her husband’s 50 years of public service as his presidency draws to a close.

For them too, their words will mark the beginning of the end.

Before the president takes the stage at the United Center to deliver the keynote address on the opening night of the convention, the first lady will use her address to talk about his character and reiterate her support for Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a person familiar with the first lady’s remarks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a speech that has not yet been delivered.

Jill Biden will call on Americans to unite in “trust in one another, hope for a better future and love for our country,” the person said, quoting the First Lady’s prepared remarks.

President Biden endorsed Harris shortly after he dropped out of the presidential race in July, and she has become his successor as the Democratic Party’s nominee.

In the weeks before Biden’s decision to drop out of the race, the First Lady had said she was fully behind her husband’s re-election plan, even as Democrats called on him to drop out of the race following his disastrous performance in a debate against Republican Donald Trump on June 27.

Biden himself had dismissed these demands and repeatedly stressed that he would stay in the race. His wife, one of his most ardent supporters and defenders, supported him in this.

“Despite all the debate over this campaign, Joe has made it clear that he is fully committed,” the first lady told a crowd in Wilmington, North Carolina, on July 8. “This is the decision he has made, and just as he has always supported my career, I am fully committed.”

Biden ended his campaign on July 21.

The first night of the four-day Democratic National Convention was postponed after Biden’s resignation. It will now honor his public service, including six terms as a U.S. senator from Delaware, eight years as vice president and a four-year term as president.

Jill Biden has accompanied her husband throughout the entire time and now both are considering what they want to achieve in the time they have left in the White House.

In the remaining months of her term, which ends in mid-January, Jill Biden will continue to work on her favorite causes, according to her aides: supporting military families through her Joining Forces initiative, reducing cancer rates through the Biden Cancer Moonshot, advancing women’s health research through an initiative to be launched in November 2023, and improving educational opportunities.

She is also expected to campaign for Harris in the fall.

The first lady broke new ground for presidential spouses by becoming the first woman to land a paying job outside the White House. She is a professor of English and writing at Northern Virginia Community College, where she has taught since 2009, and is currently working on her teaching plans for the upcoming fall semester, aides said.

As First Lady, Jill Biden traveled to over 40 states, over 200 cities and 19 countries and most recently led a delegation to support the U.S. team at the Olympic Games in France.

She spent the first year of her term traveling across the United States encouraging people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

In 2022, she traveled to Ukraine after the Russian military invasion to show US support to the Ukrainians.
