According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, disgruntled linebacker Haason Reddick turned down a one-year contract offer from the New York Jets earlier this season.

Rapoport reported Sunday that the Jets were willing to give Reddick a modified contract that would increase his salary and allow him to recoup his lost earnings while he was on hold.

“The parties understood that an amicable solution would be reached that would allow the pass rusher to play for the Jets, earn his money back and have the opportunity to play in a defense this offseason with a big 2024 “That coach believes is perfect for him to make money again,” Rapoport said. “Yet Reddick refused to sign the deal.”

The NFL insider noted that Reddick has until Week 13 to join the Jets or his contract could expire, leaving him with New York in 2025 rather than entering free agency. Rapoport even went so far as to hypothesize that the two-time Pro Bowler could retire entirely without a long-term deal.

To say that Reddick overplayed his hand would probably be an understatement.

Early on, it made theoretical sense to negotiate hard with the Jets. If New York is off to a disappointing start, general manager Joe Douglas could be desperate enough to either meet the 30-year-old’s asking price or at least come close enough to make the deal attractive.

Well, with the Jets at 2-3 and the firing of head coach Robert Saleh, we’re largely there, but an agreement with Reddick isn’t in sight. Regarding a possible long-term contract, Rapoport wrote: “At the moment there does not appear to be a market for such a deal.”

As a result, the veteran edge rusher will lose a $792,000 game check for each week he is out, on top of millions in fines accrued over the offseason.

Creative Artists Agency has Reportedly dropped Reddick as a client as well, which creates bad optics and means he no longer has formal representation to continue negotiations with the Jets.

History also raises doubts about whether the Jets could even do that Give him a trade before the November 5th deadline. If he wasn’t willing to sign an improved one-year deal with New York, it’s hard to understand why he would extend that courtesy to another franchise.
