Jets’ Allen Lazard likely to appeal NFL fine for finger-gun celebration; Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb penalized for taunting and “violent gesture.”

The NFL announced fines against 25 players on Saturday for actions during Week 4 games.

That includes a $14,069 fine against New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard for “unsportsmanlike conduct (violent gesture)” stemming from his celebrating a first-down reception with finger guns.

In addition to being fined, Lazard received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for the celebration during the game, negating a 13-yard gain.

This was Lazard’s first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of the season. If he is reported again, the NFL will deduct $19,697.

Players are allowed to appeal fines, and that seems to be what Lazard has in mind.

“If I’m fined, they’ll definitely take it out,” Lazard said this week. “It wouldn’t make sense to punish someone for something you never warned them about.” It’s like implementing a new driving rule: If you drive down the road with only one hand, you never told me that I can only drive with just two hands. That’s unfair. In that sense, it is not a legitimate democracy.”

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb was hit with two fines totaling $25,324 for two unsportsmanlike conduct/violent gestures violations in the win over the New York Giants.

The first offense occurred during his 55-yard touchdown reception because he threw the ball after entering the end zone. The second reason was more fingerguns.

This isn’t the first time the NFL has disciplined Lamb this season. He was fined $22,511 for an unnecessary roughness violation in Week 3 for lowering his shoulder and striking Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton in the chest with the top of his helmet.

Another penalty handed down this week that will further cement the NFL as a “No Fun League” is the Detroit Lions’ Jameson Williams being paid $14,069.

After scoring a 70-yard touchdown, the wide receiver celebrated the Lions’ 42-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks by dunking the ball over the crossbar at Ford Field.

No props allowed, NFL says.

What to do with all the money the league collects from players every week?

Under the NFL collective bargaining agreement, 50% of fines should go to the Players Assistance Trust, run by the NFLPA, to help care for retired players. The remaining half will go to “non-profit organizations to be jointly determined by the NFL and the NFLPA.”
