It’s fitting that the new school year ushers in fall; few things are more frightening than the hell that is school. Students must deal with homework, teachers, parents, social structures, and puberty. Teachers must deal with unruly students, their even more unruly parents, grading, and office stress. And high school is a hell unto itself.

Luckily, horror sheds light on the terrors of school from every perspective, for young and old alike. This week’s streaming pick goes back to school to capitalize on all academic anxieties and fears.

Thanks to a government-mandated law to control Japan’s disorderly youth, Class 3-B has been chosen to participate in the annual Battle Royale. The students are dropped off on a remote island, provided with provisions, and given three days to slaughter each other until a single victor emerges. Those who refuse to participate have their explosive collars detonated, are pressured to kill their classmates in order to survive, and a bloodbath ensues. Battle Royale is merciless, thrilling and often tragic as climbing the high school hierarchy takes on a violent new meaning. High school has never been so cruel or disturbing.

An exploitation film for teachers. Graduation class of 1984directed by Mark Lester and co-written by Tom Holland and John Saxton, is about Andrew Norris (Perry King), the new music teacher at a troubled inner-city school. Andrew is surprised that his new school comes features metal detectors, graffiti-covered walls and armed teachers, but that’s before he meets the student gang terrorizing the hallways. When he tries to exert his power over the gangsters, they brutally attack his wife, leading to a shocking escalation of violence and revenge. Reagan-era paranoia fuels this lurid thriller based on the 1954 novel The Table Jungle. Watch out for Roddy McDowell as a fellow teacher and Michael J. Fox as one of the school’s few innocents Children.

Aspiring writer Clint Hadson (Elijah Wood) has a rocky first day as a substitute teacher in his hometown of Fort Chicken due to unpleasant encounters with the teaching staff. Then contaminated chicken nuggets cause a mysterious virus outbreak that turns the children into feral zombies. Co-authors: Leigh Whannell, lice explores the frustrations of the teaching profession, from office politics to dealing with gross student germs. Emphasis on gross in this over-the-top zombie comedy. The all-star cast is more than up to the task of playing hilarious and ignorant horror heroes, but Whannell himself steals the show as the socially inept science teacher.

This late ’90s teen horror film from director Robert Rodriguez and screenwriter Kevin Williamson dissects the social hierarchy of high school with a wickedly funny sci-fi horror premise that wears its influences on its sleeve. Things got even weirder for Harrington High School when a parasitic alien began taking over the teachers and students one by one. Nerd Casey (Elijah Wood), loner Stokely (Clea Duvall), cheerleader Delilah (Jordana Brewster), football player Stan (Shawn Hatosy), drug dealer Zeke (Josh Hartnett), and new girl Marybeth (Laura Harris) team up to fight the invaders. Paranoia and chaos ensue, and it’s infectiously funny.

In director Bruce Pittman’s wild cult sequel, originally conceived as a standalone horror film, evil high school student and prom queen Mary Lou Maloney (Lisa Schrage) accidentally burns to death shortly after receiving her prom queen crown, and returns 30 years later to exact revenge on the men responsible: Principal Billy (Michael Ironside) and Father Cooper (Richard Monette). But a ghost seeking vengeance needs a victim. Enter virginal teenager Vicki (Wendy Lyon). Hello, Mary Lou addresses the absurdity and weirdness of teenage hormones and features a horny, evil ghost girl and offbeat scaremongering tactics – including an unforgettable carousel of nightmares.
