Jerry Jones calls out radio hosts during a spirited interview about the Cowboys’ struggles

FRISCO, Texas – Jerry Jones became agitated during his weekly radio appearance Tuesday when asked if the Dallas Cowboys’ lack of aggressiveness during the offseason played a role in their 3-3 start.

The Cowboys’ longtime owner and general manager even appeared to jeopardize the jobs of hosts Shan Shariff, RJ Choppy and Bobby Belt.

“Look, let me tell you what I’m going to do about it. I’m going to sit us down and look at the decisions we’ve made over the last few years. OK? I’ll take a look at it,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday. “Now if you think I’m interested in having a damn phone call with you over the radio and sitting here throwing out all the good things with the dishwater, you need to smoke something over there this morning. That’s not me.” . And I really don’t want our listeners to listen to me talk about it. It’s not your job to make me talk about the reasons why I did something. I’m sorry I did it. That’s not your job.

“That is not your job, or I will ask someone else to ask these questions, men. No no. I’m not kidding.”

Jones traveled to Atlanta for the NFL’s fall league meeting on Tuesday, but the effects of the Cowboys’ worst home loss of his tenure – a 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions – are still being felt.

“You’re not going to find out what the team is doing right or wrong,” Jones told the 105.3 hosts. “If you or five or 10 like you, you need to come to this meeting I’m going to today – the 32 teams here. You are geniuses. OK. Y’all really think you’re going to sit here with a microphone and tell me everything I did wrong without addressing the rights?”

Jones supported the strength of the Cowboys’ roster.

“Well, first of all, where do you go to get players? Seriously? Where are you going to get players for next week against San Francisco?” Jones said, referring to the Cowboys’ next game after their bye in Week 7. “Well, No. 1, I saw those players. I’ve seen every single one of them execute the way you want the plays to be executed and do their job within the role. That didn’t happen the other day, and We paid the consequences. But I saw the players do it.

“That’s not your job. Your job is not to let me go over the reasons why I did something and I’m sorry I did it. That’s not your job. That’s not your job, otherwise I’ll get someone else.” No, no, I’m not kidding. You’re not going to find out what the team is doing right or wrong with a microphone and tell me everything I did wrong without going into the rights?

Jones mentioned Dallas’ recent record-breaking contracts with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and also pointed to Dallas’ “undermanned defense,” which has been hit by injuries in recent weeks.

“I know we have an outstanding staff,” he said. “Very outstanding staff. We just made our quarterback the highest-paid player in the NFL. We just topped the receiver lists. So we have adjusted to how we will deal with our key people. That was us.” You’re shorthanded defensively, but that’s really no excuse in the NFL. You should be able to compensate. I can’t, so to speak, compensate for the gap that we had between the way our offense was playing and the way we should be playing.

“Now I’m going to give Detroit a lot of credit. They came after us and came after us and they put guys in front of every offensive lineman you had and they did it and applied the pressure that gave Dak one. “We had a lot of problems and caused a lot of problems for our running game. We have to deal with it.

Early in the interview, Jones didn’t miss a question about a possible head coaching change with Mike McCarthy, pointing out that he had done it another time in 2010, from Wade Phillips to Jason Garrett.

“And I won’t be doing any more during the season,” he said.

The Cowboys were 1-7 at the time of Phillips’ firing, and Jones expressed regret about the move because Phillips won a Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos as defensive coordinator.

Jones said in-season coaching changes are generally “not good and usually ineffective. They’re just not good.”

The Cowboys have the 25th-ranked defense in yards allowed and 30th in points per game after ranking fifth in both categories last year. They have dealt with numerous injuries, including four starters missing at least one game: Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Eric Kendricks and DaRon Bland.

Offensively, they are averaging 21 points per game after being No. 1 last year with 29.9 points per game. The Cowboys’ 11 giveaways are the second most in the league.

“There will be a Super Bowl champion. What are the others doing wrong? There is a Super Bowl champion,” Jones said. “Now we want to become that champion and I’m sure I won’t throw in the towel today because of what happened out there on Sunday.”

“But I’m not going to sit here and waste a lot of energy and time talking about what I should have done in 2007 or 2017.” Come on. Come on. I have more time than that and I don’t even have time to look back on decisions.
