Jeremy Sochan shines in Spurs’ loss to Heat

With almost their entire roster ready to play, the San Antonio Spurs headed to South Beach for their first away game of the preseason. It was the first opportunity to see how the rotation might develop during the regular season. San Antonio faced a strong defensive team in the Miami Heat that forced the Spurs to turn the ball over 21 times. Despite the sloppy performance, the Spurs held on to the Heat until the end, losing 120-117.

Jeremy Sochan continued his strong play with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The third-year forward did all of his damage around the rim through cuts and hits. He was successful as an off-ball striker throughout pre-season.

Everyone wants to see Sochan play against Victor Wembanyama. They connected for a fun alley-oop in transition early in the game and almost scored again a few plays later, but Sochan missed the dunk.

Wembanyama only played 17 minutes but finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds. He had a hard time finding much rhythm in his attack. He played a lot on the rim and had trouble getting to the basket against the strong Bam Adebayo. This pull-up three-pointer in transition is the type of shot that opens up his offensive game and allows him to play more inside. Seeing shots like this this fall is a good sign of great success in the second year.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a highlight piece without a Wembanyama slam. In two preseason games, his dunks looked more intense than last season. Maybe it’s the extra strength.

Keldon Johnson had a bad stretch midway through the game. He finished with 15 points on 6-10 shooting. Johnson looked explosive, especially on that steal and slam.

Chris Paul had a solid performance against Miami. He had 13 points and 5 assists despite scoring the ball six times. He was good at keeping the floor out from deep, especially in the pick-and-roll. Having a player who can bolster a defense with his shooting ability will provide a major boost to the Spurs’ offensive attack.

Stephon Castle was not used as much as previous pre-season outings. He still managed to make some highlight plays, including this powerful dunk in the second quarter.

In addition to Castle’s downhill skills, he also excelled as a passer. Castle made this sweet cross-court dime against Branham late in the fourth quarter as the Spurs stormed back. It was his fifth assist of the evening.

The Spurs have no shortage of top-notch guards on the roster. Tre Jones has become more of an afterthought behind exciting new players like Paul and Castle, but he’s still as solid as ever. Jones is great at pushing the tempo and finding his teammates in transition. His floater looked good on several occasions, including that halftime buzzer-beater.

Charles Bassey played his first game since suffering a knee injury at the start of last season. Bassey had 4 points and 4 rebounds in 10 minutes. The return was a great moment for the young big man. The knee must be doing better as he looked spry on that finish.

Malaki Branham appears to be on the outside of the Spurs rotation looking in. He’s not done fighting for a spot yet. This block was one of the best plays of the game.
