Jayden Daniels of the Commanders is in “good spirits” despite injury.

LANDOVER, Md. – Jayden Daniels’ left rib injury overshadowed the Washington Commanders’ 40-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The mood at Northwest Stadium was joyful as the Commanders took the field on a day when the franchise retired Hall of Famer Darrell Green’s number at halftime. Commanders linebacker Dante Fowler had a pick-6 to get things going in the first quarter. Then, on Washington’s first-ever offensive snap, Daniels stormed down the field for a 46-yard run.

The Commanders took a 10-0 lead. However, Washington’s hot start quickly fell behind when Daniels checked into the medical blue tent and was subsequently escorted to the locker room in apparent discomfort in the first quarter.

The Commanders initially announced in the first half that Daniels was questionable to return, but he was downgraded to out in the third quarter.

“You have to compartmentalize it for the moment and for the moments throughout the game. Obviously it happened in the first quarter,” Commanders center Tyler Biadasz said. “Hold on, keep your spirits up, hope everything is okay, and carry on.”

Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Daniels will undergo further testing Monday to determine the severity of the rib injury.

Veteran Marcus Mariota represented Daniels admirably against the hapless Panthers. The quarterback completed 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards to go with two touchdowns.

“Not a good feeling, but we were ready to adapt. We adjusted to where Marcus (Mariota) came in and did everything he was supposed to do. So it was like (Jayden Daniels) wasn’t even there, you know,” said Commander RB Brian Robinson Jr. “We’d love to have him back on the field.” I’m just glad everyone was willing to embrace it .”

Mariota said after the game that Daniels was fine.

“He was in good spirits,” Mariota said. “Most of the time you just see how he’s doing and we take care of it day by day.”

Mariota is a mobile quarterback and can run a game. He can make similar plays with his legs, although not as explosively. He recorded 74 starts over his ten-year career. He is one of the better No. 2 quarterbacks in the NFL. The Commanders’ offense changed little with Mariota under center, as they scored 30 points in Daniels’ absence.

“It actually comes down to implementing the game plan. “None of us has really changed,” Mariota said. “As quarterbacks, we talk about situations and scenarios all the time. …We all have an idea of what that should look like.”

The 1-6 Panthers are not a suitable opponent for the Commanders without Daniels to compete with. The Commanders can ill afford to lose Daniels for any length of time if they hope to win the NFC East for the first time since 2020.

Commanders must hope that Daniels’ tests return positive results. The good news is that the quarterback was sweaty on the sideline waving to fans in the second half. More evidence that the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year front-runner is in good spirits.
