Investing.com – Japanese stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the Shipbuilding, Energy and Manufacturing sectors led shares higher.

At the close of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.14 percent, reaching a new monthly high.

The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were IHI Corp. (TYO:7013), which rose 5.52% or 350.00 points to trade at 6,688.00 at the close. Meanwhile, Credit Saison Co., Ltd. (TYO:8253) added 5.43% or 175.00 points to close at 3,400.00 and Fujikura Ltd. (TYO:5803) rose 4.94% or 208.00 points to 4,415.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co Ltd (TYO:4506), which lost 6.13% or 41.00 points to trade at 628.00 at the close. Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (TYO:4519) declined 6.07% or 448.00 points to end at 6,936.00. Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd. (TYO:9064) was down 3.37% or 57.00 points to 1,635.00.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by 2,109 to 1,517, and 255 stocks closed unchanged.

IHI Corp. (TYO:7013) shares rose to a 5-year high, up 5.52% or 350.00 to close at 6,688.00. Fujikura Ltd. (TYO:5803) shares rose to an all-time high, up 4.94% or 208.00 to close at 4,415.00.

Nikkei volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, fell 6.08% to 21.32, a new one-month low.

Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.60% or 0.44 to trade at $73.11 a barrel. In commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in November fell 0.71% or 0.55 to trade at $76.38 a barrel, while the December Gold Futures contract rose 0.22% or 5.50 to trade at $2,533.10 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY rose 0.08% to 146.27, while EUR/JPY rose 0.17% to 161.76.

US dollar index futures fell 0.03% to 101.59.
