James Cameron gives a preview of the new “Terminator” film — World of Reel

In conversation with THRWhile promoting his upcoming NatGeo documentary “OceanXplorers,” James Cameron was asked about the “Terminator” franchise.

Cameron casually mentioned that he was working on his own “Terminator stuff.” Unfortunately, the filmmaker remained tight-lipped and did not reveal what it was. “It’s top secret,” Cameron teased. “I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robot agent when you talk about it, even after the fact.”

Media reporting on Cameron’s comments make it seem as if the news came out of the blue. But have they forgotten that Cameron had already twice hinted at a Terminator film that he wanted to write and direct at the time?

If you remember, Cameron had in 2022 mentioned He added that he is in “talks” about directing the next ‘Terminator’ film…

If I were to make another Terminator movie and maybe try to reboot the franchise (which is being discussed but nothing has been decided yet), I would put a lot more emphasis on the AI side rather than crazy evil robots.

One year later confirmed that he was currently in the process of writing the film and that he wanted to wait and see how AI developed before continuing.

I don’t know if those plans have changed, but it certainly sounds like Cameron is still heavily involved. Is he still directing? That seems to be the million dollar question. The fact is, Cameron has three more Avatar movies to make before he can find time for another franchise.

Cameron has not directed a Terminator film since Terminator: Judgement Day, although he was heavily involved in Terminator: Dark Fate, directed by Tim Miller. The film received poor reviews and reportedly 120 million dollars lost.

Cameron has spoken about his regret at casting Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Dark Fate. He also infamously creative differences with director Miller during production and post-production on the film. The only way to inject some much-needed new energy into this tired old franchise is for Cameron to return to the director’s chair, and it looks like that could be a possibility.
