Jalen Johnson’s stock rises as the Hawks fall to the Miami Heat, 120-111

The Hawks lost to the Miami Heat in their third preseason game. They fielded the following starting lineup: Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Vit Krejci, Jalen Johnson and Clint Capela. Bogdan Bogdanovic, Zacharrie Risacher, Seth Lundy, Dominick Barlow, Onyeka Okongwu and De’Andre Hunter were eliminated from this competition.

The Hawks led 16-12 before the first substitutions took place. Of note, Krejci recorded three assists and made one three-pointer in this stint with the starters. David Roddy and Kobe Bufkin were first at the scorer’s table.

The Hawks hit a few three-pointers and trailed by two points after the first quarter. They finished the first quarter 7 of 8 from distance, but committed 10 turnovers to tie the game. Capela left the game with ankle soreness and did not return.

Jalen Johnson started the second quarter with another poster dunk.

Johnson also made all four of his three-point attempts in the first half. His 21 points would lead all scorers. A stunning three-pointer from Jimmy Butler cut the Hawks’ lead to 69-66 at halftime. The stories of the half included Johnson scoring, making 13 of 19 three-point attempts and assisting on 20 of his 23 made field goals. Trae Young led the way with eight assists.

Neither Young nor Johnson started in the second half and were likely rested for the rest of the contest. The Heat controlled the third quarter and took an eight-point lead before the Hawks called a timeout just after halftime.

The timeout proved fruitless as the Heat continued their run. With Krejci, Mathews, Roddy, Gueye and Daniels (then Bufkin), the Heat’s lead grew to over 20 points. Kevon Harris and Keaton Wallace would come in for the Hawks.

The Hawks ran with David Roddy under center to start the fourth. Both teams finished the game with rotational pieces and untested players, and the Hawks cut the deficit to 10 with 8:01 left in the game. Daeqwon Plowden comes into play for the first time.

The Hawks managed to get within single digits late but never posed a real threat.

Hawks 111, Heat 120.
