“It’s overwhelming.” Children leave candy for the family on Halloween after reading the sign

WOODHAVEN, Mich. (WXYZ) — A group of neighborhood kids in Woodhaven went out for a normal night of trick-or-treating on Halloween, but instead of taking all those treats home, they stopped to share them with a friend share that they had said I need them more.

Amy Schmitt and her son love dressing up and handing out candy on Halloween, but after a medical emergency sent him to the hospital, a few neighborhood kids knew just how to cheer him up.

“It’s overwhelming, all the love we have… and I don’t know half of these people,” Amy said.

Amy says she has been in the hospital with her son since Tuesday.

But because she and her son love dressing up and handing out candy on Halloween, she didn’t want the neighborhood kids to be disappointed.

“I left a message saying my son is in the hospital and we don’t have any candy. “I’m sorry,” she said.

She says she received notifications from her doorbell camera that motion was detected.

“And tons of kids throwing out baskets full of candy,” Amy said.

It was the most heartwarming surprise for Amy and her son Jacob.

One of those children who gave away their candy was 6-year-old Mia.

“When she finished her first round she wanted to sit down, so we sat by the house and she asked, ‘Dad, can we go back out?’ And I say, ‘Sure we can go out again.'” With all the candy she picked up the second time, she says, “I don’t want that candy, I want to leave it here,” said Mia’s father, James Sayen.

James says his daughter made the decision entirely on her own – a decision he says even impressed him.

“She felt bad and didn’t want anyone to go without candy on Halloween,” James said.

Amy says the parents of these children deserve recognition for raising such kind young people.

“It’s just unbelievable…what these parents raised these kids to do,” Amy said. “To be able to do that there without your parents is remarkable.”

Amy says she and Jacob couldn’t be more grateful for their friendly neighbors.

“It was just so thoughtful to go the extra mile for someone,” she said.
