Israel attacks Beirut as death toll rises from attacks in Cana, southern Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) — Israeli warplanes struck Beirut’s southern suburbs early Wednesday for the first time in six days, Lebanese state media reported. The number of victims has not yet been determined.

The attack comes just a day after acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the United States government had given him some assurances that Israel would ease its attacks in the Lebanese capital.

Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah assets in the suburbs, where the militant group has a strong presence but is also a busy residential and commercial area. The Israeli military said Wednesday’s attack hit a weapons cache beneath a residential building.

The Israeli military posted an evacuation warning on the X platform saying it was targeting a building in the Haret Hreik neighborhood. An Associated Press photographer who witnessed the attacks said there were three in the area. The first strike was documented less than an hour after the announcement.

Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel on October 8 in solidarity with the Palestinian militant group Hamas following its surprise attack on southern Israel. A year of low-level fighting escalated into full-scale war last month, displacing about 1.2 million people in Lebanon.

At least 15 people were killed in Israeli strikes late Tuesday in the southern city of Cana, according to the Lebanese Civil Defense. Nuhad Bustanji, a spokesman for first responders, said rescue efforts were still ongoing and the number of victims could rise.

Videos shared on social media showed the smoking ruins of a building targeted in the attack, with surrounding buildings also damaged. Local media reported that there were several strikes in the southern city on Tuesday evening.

Qana was the site of an Israeli artillery attack on a United Nations compound in 1996 that killed dozens of civilians.
