Isaiah Likely and Baker Mayfield break out

In the first week of the NFL season, several undrafted players were nominated who were now to be picked up from the waiver list.

Surprisingly, few fantasy free agent players appeared on the stat sheets. However, stats that lead to fantasy points aren’t the only thing to examine…snaps, targets, and touches are all important and in many cases provide insight into how a player might be used in the future.

Here are 10 players to consider claiming off waivers ahead of Sunday night’s game. For a full list of waiver signings at the end of the week, check out Jen Piacenti’s fantasy free agent list, published Tuesdays in Sports Illustrated.

Plus, Lindsay Rhodes and I will be discussing everything on the Fantasy Dirt podcast five days a week, and there’s a live stream on Sunday where we’ll answer your questions. Just subscribe to us using these links: Apple | Spotify | YouTube

Isaiah Likely, TE, Ravens (ESPN – 9.6%; Yahoo! – 28%; Sleeper – 44%)

Isaiah will likely be the top recruit in fantasy football after his stellar performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was targeted 12 times, caught nine passes for 111 yards with one touchdown, and scored 26.1 points. That may be his best stat of the season, but it’s hard to ignore, especially considering how often he was used on offense.

Rashid Shaheed, WR, Saints (ESPN – 42.1%; Yahoo! – 54%; Sleeper – 13%)

One of my favorite players from the preseason, Shaheed opened the season with 73 yards and a touchdown in a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers. His touchdown came on a 59-yard pass from Derek Carr less than three minutes into the game. Shaheed didn’t have many targets (5), but he’s a playmaker who can lead to a win at any time.

Baker Mayfield, QB, Buccaneers (ESPN – 34%; Yahoo! – 34%; Sleeper – 13%)

I was shocked to see how low Mayfield’s ownership is on all three platforms. After all, he was QB10 last season! He was great in the Buccaneers’ opening game with four touchdowns and 30 fantasy points in a blowout win over the Commanders. Mayfield is a borderline QB1 when the matchup is favorable and he needs to be included in leagues.

Justice Hill, RB, Ravens (ESPN – 3.4%; Yahoo! – 4%; Sleeper – 0%)

Hill won’t displace Derrick Henry from the top of the Ravens’ backfield depth chart, but he has stood out in PPR leagues with eight targets, six catches and 11.5 points. If this performance continues, Hill could be on the radar for flex starters while Keaton Mitchell is out of action. The pass catcher is currently available in most fantasy leagues.

Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Giants (ESPN – 6.9%; Yahoo! – 28%; Sleeper – 8%)

Robinson had decent stats (11.8 points), but it was the targets (12) that intrigued me. The Giants have no weapons on offense other than Mailk Nabers, a rookie who might need some time to adjust to the pro level. I’m not saying Robinson will become a weekly option in fantasy lineups, but that kind of volume makes him worthy of a spot on the roster.

Justin Field

Justin Fields, QB, Steelers (ESPN – 11%; Yahoo! – 14%; Sleeper – 98%)

Sleeper estimates Fields is nearly 100% owned by the team, but ESPN and Yahoo! have him at less than 15%. Regardless, and despite a mediocre fantasy performance against Atlanta, he’s at least worth a speculative signing if Russell Wilson’s calf injury costs him more games. The rushing quarterback will face the Broncos next weekend at Mile High.

Juwan Johnson, TE, Saints (ESPN – 14.8%; Yahoo! – 3%; Sleeper – 39%)

Johnson didn’t have many passes against the Panthers (3), but he found the end zone and scored 10.6 points. Last season, he scored at least 10.6 points in four of his last five games. Overall, he averaged 13.4 points in those games. Considering how thin the tight end position is, it makes sense to get Johnson now.

Alexander Mattison, RB, Raiders (ESPN – 10.3%; Yahoo! – 4%; Sleeper – 95%)

I question Sleeper’s information, especially when it suggests Mattison was 81% of the starter this week. That’s impossible. Regardless, the veteran will be part of the Raiders backfield along with Zamir White, and he won’t be limited to the passing game. In fact, he caught a 31-yard pass from Gardner Minshew on a first down play and had nine touches in the entire game.

Tank Bigsby, RB, Jaguars (ESPN – 4.6%; Yahoo! – 5%; Sleeper – 60%)

Bigsby had 12 carries, tying Travis Etienne Jr. as the team’s best player, and led the Jaguars with 73 rushing yards in a loss to the Miami Dolphins. I wouldn’t freak out if I was an Etienne Jr. fan, as Bigsby only played 17 snaps (20 fewer), but the Auburn product is worth adding. At the very least, whoever has Etienne Jr. should try to get Bigsby as a handcuff.

Tucker Kraft, TE, Packers (ESPN – 3.7%; Yahoo! – 2%; Sleeper – 2%)

Kraft didn’t put up great numbers against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he was on the field significantly more than Luke Musgrave. In fact, he outscored his teammate 64-17 and was only off the field for one snap. That’s a surprise, as many analysts (including me) would have liked to see Musgrave. However, if Week 1 is any indication, Kraft is worth owning.
