Every four years, Americans go to the polls to vote in the presidential election.

This year, America could vote for a Kamala Harris-Tim Walz or Donald Trump-JD Vance government, among others. In addition to electing the commander in chief, millions will also vote for U.S. representatives and senators. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 34 seats in the Senate are up for election.

Election Day is less than a month away, so you may be wondering if you have the day off work. If you plan to fulfill your civic duty, here’s what you should know.

When is Election Day 2024?

The 2024 election will take place on November 5, 2024. According to the Justice Department, Election Day takes place on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Is Election Day a federal holiday?

Election Day is not a federal holiday.

However, some states observe Election Day as a holiday. Most government offices are closed on this day, including:

24 states and the District of Columbia offer paid time off to vote.

Some states offer time off to vote but without pay, including Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.
