As reported today (October 21st), former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’Anno has died at the age of 66. Now Maiden have paid tribute to their former frontman, calling him a “groundbreaking figure”.

“We are all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Di’Anno today,” Maiden said in a statement on the band’s social media channels. “Paul’s contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been on as a band for almost five decades. His groundbreaking presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be fondly remembered not only by us, but by fans around the world.”

The statement continued: “We were very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and spend time with him again a few years ago.” On behalf of the band, (co-manager) Rod (Smallwood) and To Andy (Taylor) and the entire Iron Maiden team, we extend our deepest condolences to Paul’s family and close friends. Rest in peace, Paul.”

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, who founded the legendary British metal band in 1975, added his own tribute, writing: “It’s just so sad that he’s gone. I only recently got in touch with him when we texted each other about West Ham and its ups and downs. At least he was still performing until recently, being outside whenever he could was something that kept him going. We will all miss him. Rest in peace, buddy.”

As noted in the joint statement, current members of Maiden have reconnected with Di’Anno in recent years. The band shared a photo of Harris and Di’Anno together, while we recently reported that current singer Bruce Dickinson met Di’Anno for the first time over the summer.

Di’Anno, who was confined to a wheelchair in recent years, died after a series of health problems. So far, no specific cause of death has been announced.
