Irish Premiership: “The players were told this was not acceptable” – McDonnell

Glenavon manager Stephen McDonnell admitted that “decisions will be made regarding the team line-up” following his team’s 3-0 defeat to Linfield at Mourneview Park.

It was the worst possible start to the game for Glenavon: Linfield’s Joel Cooper equalised in the first two minutes before Kirk Millar doubled the lead and Cooper scored his second goal of the evening before half-time.

“I’m not a swear word or a raver, but to be honest, I turned everything upside down in there,” McDonnell said.

“The players were told that this was not acceptable. How can we accept not making any tackles when we are 3-0 down?

“We controlled the entire second half. The opponent knew that the game was decided, but we moved the ball very well and were alert and didn’t allow anything.

“All the players who came on as substitutes in the second half were really good and helped us make the decision we needed for Saturday.”

“Ultimately, decisions will now be made about team selection and everything I say here has already been said to the players.”

“It has to get better and the performance in the first half was not acceptable, but we can absolutely handle the second half, the tackles, the good passes and (we were) really aggressive.”

McDonnell was also unhappy with the referee’s performance. He felt there should have been a free kick in the build-up to Cooper’s first goal and his team should have been awarded a penalty when they were 1-0 down.

“There were individual mistakes, but you still need the help of the referee team,” he added.

“Before the mistake happened, there should have been a free kick in the run-up to the first goal.

“They take the lead and we come back well. And then there’s an obvious penalty, like here on Saturday, which wasn’t given (he’s referring to a foul on Peter Campbell). How can you give away an advantage? Where’s the advantage? Brutal decision.”

The result means Glenavon are still waiting for their first point of the season after three games.
