iPhone 16 hands-on video reveals the phone’s design secrets

The iPhone 16 will be about a month away. Apple is widely expected to unveil the 2024 phones on September 10. As in previous years, iPhone fans who have been closely following the rumor season already know what to expect from the new devices.

But even if you don’t follow leaks closely, there’s one thing you probably expect from the next-generation iPhones. Apple will likely stick with the iPhone design it’s used for the past few years. There’s no point in changing something that works here, although you can’t do anything crazy with smartphone design these days.

The iPhone 16 models will not be copies of their predecessors. Apple has further optimized the design and made several changes that have been leaked repeatedly this year: the vertical camera setup, the action button and the new record button.

We’ve seen renderings showing the design changes over the past few months. Then photos of dummy devices started to surface. First, the metal models leaked. Then we saw iPhone 16 dummies in the alleged colors Apple chose for the new line.

This brings us to arguably the best look at the iPhone 16 before the handset hits stores. We have a hands-on video that walks us through all the design changes.

YouTubers Zollotech has got its hands on five iPhone 16 dummies. We’re looking at the same color options we saw a few days ago when images of the same iPhone 16 dummies appeared online. These are white, black, blue, green, and pink.

Unlike these images, the video gives us a 360-degree view of the iPhone 16. The iPhone 16 Plus will of course feature the same design.

From the hands-on video, it appears that the iPhone 16 will be about the same size and thickness as its predecessor, but I expect there to be a difference of a few millimeters between the two.

The iPhone 16 will feature three distinct design elements that differentiate it from the iPhone 15. First, the camera module on the back has been fundamentally changed. We see a vertical arrangement of the two cameras instead of the diagonal arrangement that Apple has used in recent years.

The reason for the change is easy to guess. Apple probably wants the cheaper models to be able to record spatial videos, which look fantastic on the Vision Pro.

Then there’s the Action button, which replaces the mute switch above the volume buttons. The iPhone 15 Pros introduced the Action button, which will be available on all four iPhone 16 models this year. In my opinion, it’s a great addition to the cheaper iPhones. I’m still on the iPhone 14 Pro and can’t wait to get an Action button.

What excites me even more is the record button on the opposite side. The new button is located below the standby/power button, as seen in the hands-on video with these iPhone 16 dummy units. It appears to be capacitive, and rumors say the record button performs different actions depending on the pressure of your touch.

The record button is possibly the biggest hardware upgrade in iPhone history and I’m sure I’ll put it to good use once I get an iPhone 16.

As for the iPhone 16’s display, I’d like to reiterate that these are dummy devices and not functional phones. These are devices that accessory makers use to design and test their products before the launch of the next-generation iPhone. As such, the screen is not functional, so nothing can be seen in the hands-on video below. Expect the same Dynamic Island display on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
