iPad app Procreate rejects competitor’s AI path: “Your work belongs to you”

AI is all the rage these days, and apps and services are constantly adopting some form of AI technology. Apple is doing the same with its upcoming Apple Intelligence features. But some creative apps are fighting back, including the popular iPad app Procreate, which says, “AI is not our future.”

Procreate’s creator-friendly attitude towards generative AI

Over the weekend, Procreate launched a new page on its website to highlight its stance on AI and user privacy. The page lists three key commitments the app is making:

  • No generative AI: We deeply respect your hard-earned skills.
  • Your work belongs to you: We intentionally do not have access to your art.
  • We value privacy: Your activity is not tracked in our apps.

The site also features the beautiful quote “Creativity is made, not produced,” which explains the company’s reasons for this attitude.

Generative AI strips the humanity out of things. The technology is based on theft and is steering us towards a bleak future. We think machine learning is a compelling technology with many benefits, but the path generative AI is taking is the wrong one for us.

We are here for the people. We are not chasing technology that poses a moral threat to our greatest jewel: human creativity. In this technological onslaught, this could make us an exception or put us at risk of being left behind. But we see this path less traveled as the more exciting and fruitful one for our community.

James Cuda, CEO of Procreate, reiterates on X that the company will not introduce generative AI into its products.

Procreate has been one of the most popular and powerful creative tools on the iPad for years, with Apple regularly showcasing it in the App Store and at various media events.

At a time when other tools like Adobe Creative Cloud are fully committed to AI, Procreate is now positioning itself as an AI-free tool for creatives.

9to5Mac’s opinion

It will be interesting to see over time if this stance can hold up without doing a disservice to Procreate users. The current creative complications that AI brings are obvious, but after the initial AI gold rush, we’ll see if companies find ways to implement AI that are less threatening to developers and offer more privacy protections.
