Intercity bus company Megabus is ceasing operations across Texas, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Destiny Canty visits Houston from Georgia.

She planned to get to Austin on Friday afternoon, but was surprised to learn that she could no longer get there by Megabus.

“It’s kind of inconvenient for a lot of people,” she said, desperately searching for another transportation option.

Megabus is a low-cost bus service that began operations in Texas in June 2012.

The company, whose fares start at $1, operated in Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin when it came to the Lone Star State.

Since last Friday, traffic to and from all these cities has been suspended.

“This is a huge loss,” says Mustafa Tameez of the Transportation Advocacy Group – Houston.

“We need affordable transportation,” he said. “Megabus was one of those affordable options that is no longer available to us.”

A Megabus spokesman said services will continue in 500 additional cities across North America.

Coach USA, the parent company of Megabus, filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

Do Megabus passengers in Texas have other options when it comes to cheap bus travel?

ABC13 spoke to some passengers who said they will use FlixBus or Greyhound in the future.

Chanell Wilder arrived in the city on Friday afternoon on a FlixBus after previously using the Megabus for her trips to and from Dallas.

“It’s only been a few days. I already miss it,” she said.

In a statement to ABC13, the company described the decision to leave the area as “difficult.”

The statement also said they would update ABC13 if there were any changes regarding future routes back to Texas.
