Mikel Arteta has given fitness updates on Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli ahead of Arsenal’s game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Ahead of a Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk and a big Premier League game against Liverpool this week, Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of some of their key players.

The list includes Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, and Mikel Arteta points out that while both are making good progress, only one has a chance of being involved on Tuesday.

“They are closer. “Both are making really good progress,” said Arteta.

“Martin is still not fit. Let’s see how Bukayo feels later after training.”

Jurrien Timber also missed Arsenal’s game against Bournemouth at the weekend, but the good news is that he at least has a chance of returning against Shakhtar.

“He will be close,” Arteta said of Timber. “We have to see how he copes with training with the whole group. It was a muscle injury.”

As for Gabriel Martinelli, the winger made a substitute appearance for Arsenal after the international break ended on Saturday.

Arteta has now confirmed that the player “was not fit enough to start the game”. Hopefully Tuesday will be a different story.

Loan goalkeeper Neto will return to the squad after being ineligible to play against parent club Bournemouth, while William Saliba will be available at the weekend despite his red card as he serves his domestic ban against Liverpool.
