Injury update: Lions still ‘not sure’ if Penei Sewell will play against Bucs

It’s still unclear if All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell or defensive end Marcus Davenport of the Detroit Lions will be able to play this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both have missed the last two practices, although coach Dan Campbell noted they will try to get both back on the field at Friday’s practice.

“We’ll see if we can get Sewell out of there a little bit today. Same with Davenport,” Campbell said. “I’m not sure yet (if they’ll play), but we’ll see.”

UPDATE: Sewell returned to training on Friday, but Davenport remained out.

Campbell was asked if Sewell’s situation was similar to Taylor Decker’s last season, when the Lions’ left tackle finished the Week 1 game despite suffering a sprained ankle. Decker missed the next two games, but Campbell said Sewell’s injury was a bit different.

“I think it’s more media-related,” Campbell said. “It’s a healing process, we’re just trying to approach it with caution.”

If Sewell can’t play, they’ll likely use Dan Skipper at right tackle. The veteran offensive tackle has started six games in his seven-year career, including one of the games Decker missed early last season.

Nevertheless, Sewell has now told two reporters that he is fine, and he apparently insisted to reporter Justin Rogers that he intends to play.

As for Davenport, Campbell noted that the return of DJ Reader this week will help them make up for that if needed.

“The good news is we’re getting Reader back this week,” Campbell continued. “I feel pretty good about that. So (Reader’s) return really opens up a little more versatility on the D-line. Because (Kyle) Peko, (Alim) Mac(Neill), Levi (Onwuzurike) and (Josh) Paschal can all play anywhere from nose (tackle) to 3-technique to big end. So they’re all going to share that load if Davenport can’t play.”

The Lions’ final injury report is expected to be released around 4 p.m. ET on Friday with the official game designations for their Week 2 game.
