In memory of James Darren, 1936–2024 | Star Trek

Darren soon moved to the big screen and played the lead role in the science fiction time travel series The time tunnel. He continued to book guest roles in a number of popular series such as SWAT, policewoman, Charlie’s Angeles, Police history, Hawaii Five-O, The Love Boat, Fantasy IslandAnd Melrose Squarewhile pursuing his love of live music performances. Darren then tried his hand at directing television episodes for series such as The A-Team, Walker, Texas Ranger, Silk stalking, Beverly Hills, 90210, savannahAnd Melrose Square.

Darren would secure a regular role in the police drama TJ Hookerfrom 1983 to 1986, in the role of Officer James Corrigan alongside William Shatner, who shared an obituary on X (formerly Twitter): “What a wonderful man – so talented, so loving. I had the best time with him. The world is less for his loss.”

Fans of Star Trek knew Darren best as fan favorite Vic Fontaine, an entertainer who ran the popular holoprogram at Quark’s, Vic’s Last Vegas LoungeIn Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His warm, confident, and sophisticated programming made him a favorite of the Deep Space 9 crew, especially for giving Dr. Julian Bashir dating advice and helping Nog cope with his PTSD following his deployment in the Dominion War.

In a 2019 interview with StarTrek.com, Darren said, “Vic Fontaine was – what can I say? – a dream come true for me. It was one of the most enjoyable roles I’ve ever played.”

Of recording the series finale with the cast, he said, “The finale was hard to do. The cast had always been there, so it was hard for them, and it was hard for me too because my relationship with everyone had grown instantly. I loved the entire cast. When it ended, it was so sad, sad for them, and extremely sad for me too. I sang that song to Nana Visitor (‘The Way You Look Tonight’)… and she started crying. And when she started crying, I started crying. It was hard to go through that.”

Darren leaves behind his wife Evy, his sons Jim Moret, Christian Darren and Tony Darren, five grandchildren and a goddaughter.
