I-90 West closed due to explosive device investigation

The westbound lanes of I-90 will be completely closed on Mercer Island Saturday as police investigate what they believe could be an explosive device in the area.

Previously, the eastbound lanes were also closed, causing massive traffic jams that are still causing long delays for Mercer Island area motorists.

Closure of I-90 on Mercer Island (WSDOT)

Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on October 12, Bellevue police shut down all traffic in both directions on I-=90 east of Island Crest Way.

Mercer Island police announced an increased police presence due to what appeared to be an explosive device thrown from a car.

According to Officer Rick Johnson, a bomb squad arrived as authorities arrested two suspects.

The incident began when Bellevue police attempted to conduct a traffic stop and the suspect vehicle fled. The Washington State Police were then called to assist. According to WSP, something was thrown from the vehicle during the chase, which may have been an explosive device.

At this point, traffic in the area came to a complete standstill. Westbound from Bellevue Way and eastbound from 76th Street. The eastbound lanes were reopened shortly before 2 p.m

This is a developing story.
