Hurricane Oscar forms off the Bahamas

The The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Hurricane Oscar formed off the coast of the Bahamas.

Oscar, which the hurricane center described as “tiny,” formed Saturday. Oscar – the 15th named storm of the hurricane season – formed as a tropical storm east of the Turks and Caicos Islands before quickly becoming a hurricane.

The government of the Bahamas has issued a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeast of the Bahamas. The Cuban government has issued a hurricane warning for the provinces of Guantánamo, Holguin and Las Tunas.

Heavy rain is expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands and southeastern Bahamas this evening and tomorrow, the hurricane center said. The rains are expected to spread to eastern Cuba on Sunday.

The storm’s maximum sustained wind speed was 80 miles per hour, with stronger gusts. It was centered about 165 miles east-southeast of the southeastern Bahamas and about 470 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba.

Tropical Storm Nadine Created hours before in the western Caribbean and moves west toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It made landfall near Belize City, Belize, around 12 p.m. Eastern time.

Heavy rains and tropical storms occurred over parts of Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Belize City and from Belize to Cancun, Mexico, including Cozumel.

The Atlantic Hurricane season The event officially began on June 1st and ends on November 30th, with most activities taking place between mid-August and mid-October. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, hurricane activity peaks in mid-September.

In Florida, communities along the Gulf Coast are struggling with back-to-back hurricanes Hurricane Helene struck the region less than two weeks before the hurricane Milton arrived.
