Hunters Moon means time, next full moon

Borderland moon lovers may want to enjoy the Hunter’s Moon in White Sands National Park. The event includes entertainment.

The Hunter’s Moon – the first full moon of fall – will rise around sunset on Thursday, October 17th. This month’s full moon will also be a supermoon.

The moon’s nickname is easy to understand when you know that wildlife, particularly deer, turkeys and pheasants, are traditionally hunted in mid to late fall.

Here’s what you should know about the Hunter’s Moon.

Was there a full moon last night?

No. October’s full moon is scheduled for Thursday, October 17th. Maximum illumination will occur at 5:26 p.m. MT and 6:26 p.m. CT, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

What is a Hunter’s Moon?

October’s full moon is called the “Hunter’s Moon” because it is the time of year when hunters historically began gathering food and storing it for the long, cold winter months ahead, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

“Many moons ago, Native Americans named this bright moon for obvious reasons,” the almanac says. “The leaves are falling from the trees, the deer are fattening, and it’s time to stockpile meat for the long winter ahead.”

Next full moon 2024

The next supermoon is Friday, November 15th, also known as the Beaver Moon because beavers begin building their dams before the ground freezes.

What is a Supermoon?

When the moon’s orbit brings it closer to Earth than usual, the cosmic combination is called a supermoon. In this case, the moon may appear slightly larger and brighter than normal.

“Different publications use slightly different thresholds to decide when a full moon is close enough to Earth to be considered a supermoon,” NASA says. “Because the Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle, the Moon is sometimes closer to Earth during its orbit than at other times.”

On average, supermoons appear about 7% larger and about 15% brighter than a typical full moon.

This is the third of four supermoons in a row: after October 17th, the last supermoon of the year will take place on November 15th.

Four planets will be visible to the naked eye

According to Space.com, four planets will be connected in the night sky by the Hunter’s moon: Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. They will all rise in the hours before or after the full moon rises, depending on where you are.

The full moon night takes place in White Sands National Park

Visitors to White Sands National Park can enjoy a special full moon night starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 17th. This is the fifth full moon night planned this year in collaboration with the Western National Parks Association.

Randy Granger is a well-known multi-instrumentalist, composer, recording artist and singer-songwriter. According to his website, he combines elements of Southwest music such as Native American flutes with world percussion, distinctive vocals and otherworldly HandPan instruments such as Halo, Panart Hang and Moyo, Zen Tambour.

The event is free, but guests must pay admission, White Sands said. Admission is at the regular price. A standard pass costs $15 to $25.
