How to watch Kamala Harris’ concession speech | US elections 2024

Kamala Harris will give a speech this afternoon conceding his defeat to Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Here’s what you should know.

Where will Harris give her concession speech?

Harris will appear at Howard University, her alma mater, in Washington DC to deliver a concession speech.

On the night of the election, supporters gathered on the historic campus were in a celebratory mood, but as the likelihood of a Democratic victory diminished, the mood grew darker.

Harris was scheduled to appear before the crowd on election night but did not show up. Instead, campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond took the stage to address supporters.

Harris also launched her unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination at Howard and used the campus to prepare for her August debate against Trump.

When will she speak?

Her speech will take place at 4:00 p.m. ET.

The New York Times reported that Harris was scheduled to call Trump this afternoon to concede. The call for concessions is not a legal requirement in the US election, nor is the concession speech.

When did the losing candidate give in in past elections?

In 2016, Hilary Clinton gave a concession speech on Wednesday morning. “Donald Trump will be our president,” she said in Manhattan. “We owe him an open mind and a chance to take the lead.”

In both 2012 and 2008, the election for Barack Obama was called before midnight.

In 2020, Trump refused to hand the US election to Joe Biden. He has not publicly admitted that he lost.

Here’s how to watch Harris’ concession speech

Major news networks will likely broadcast the speech live. CBS will stream the speech and CNN will likely make it available on its YouTube channel.

The Guardian will broadcast the speech live and a team of reporters will report live on our election blog.

What did she say on election night?

Harris made no public comment after polls closed on election night, only urging voters on social media to stay in line at their polling locations.

Harris was expected to speak to his supporters on election night. However, when the results came in and it became clear that their path to victory had disappeared,

Richmond addressed the crowd at her election night party: “We still have votes to count. We still have states that haven’t been called yet.”

He confirmed that Harris would not speak, but said the campaign would “continue to fight overnight to ensure that every vote is counted and that every voice has spoken.”

What you should know about Trump’s victory speech

As Trump appeared before supporters in Florida last night with his family, close confidants and running mate JD Vance, he called his victory the “greatest political movement of all time.”

“There has never been anything like this in this country and now it will reach a new level of importance because we will help our country heal,” Trump said.

“We will repair our borders. We will fix everything in our country… I will not rest until we create the strong, safe, and prosperous America our children deserve. This will truly be the golden age of America.”

What happens next?

Harris will chair a joint session of Congress in January to certify the election results. Trump will be sworn in as the 47th US President on January 20, 2025.
