During a PaleyFest panel honoring the show’s final season on Thursday, stars Tom Selleck, Vanessa Ray and Donnie Wahlberg looked back at some of their tricks — and the biggest mistakes they’ve made at the table over the past 14 seasons.

“The truth can be told because the eight episodes (of the final season) are finished,” Selleck, who played proud patriarch Frank Reagan, said at the event. “We all have tricks. Bridget (Moynahan) is a food masher. She holds her hand very actively and mixes her potatoes and everything.

Ray, who played Eddie Janko, told the audience that she took the advice of Moynahan and her co-star Len Cariou and quickly joined the potato smash club after getting a little too excited during her first few meals.

“The first few times I sat at the dining table I ate the rolls. “I didn’t just put butter on the rolls,” she revealed. “And I think at one point Bridget said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ I’m like, “Why?” (And she said,) “Well, it’s your funeral, girl.” And I kept eating and I realized, ‘Oh, you can’t eat 17 rolls.'”

Wahlberg, on the other hand, claimed that he actually ate something during dinner – but was picky about what he ate depending on his busy work schedule with his pop group New Kids on the Block.

“There’s a silly part of the food and a real part of the food, and the silly part is that when I went on tour the following summer, I only ate vegetables,” he confessed. “If not, I ate, whatever. And a few times I got high on the whipped cream in the desserts as much as I was able to talk with my mouth full in that first dinner scene.”

It was also the perfect way to showcase his character Danny’s cheeky personality. “That’s like throwing an insult across the table without even looking up, taking a bite of my food and moving on,” he teased. “I just thought it would be an opportunity to be a bull in a china shop in a place where I can’t really do it. There’s only so far you can go at the table because if Dad doesn’t smash his head.” “Grandpa will. That was exactly my thing.”

While others had a hard time resisting the delicious food they were served, Selleck revealed that the idea of ​​talking and eating at the same time was his biggest “problem” on set.

“At the Selleck family dinner table – when it was just my two brothers and my mother and father, we always ate breakfast – you didn’t talk with your mouth full,” he said. “So I can’t really do it at family dinner. So I said, ‘Well, you better not eat, because you might not swallow it when your next line comes.’ Very complicated.”
