Although a presidential debate provides an unprecedented arena for competing candidates to showcase their qualifications and policy proposals, it is also a performance in which visuals can sometimes trump even the smoothest lines.

Before Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump took the stage for their first debate on Tuesday night, Trump spoke on social media about Harris’ greatness and said no concessions should be made during the debate.

Harris was seen walking to the podium in flat shoes.

“During my upcoming debate with Comrade Kamala Harris, there will be no standing in boxes or artificial elevators permitted,” Trump said in the post, calling such arrangements “a form of fraud.”

Harris is 5’4″ to Trump’s 6’3″, which means there is a significant height difference between the two candidates. However, there has been some back and forth about Harris’ height, with Trump poking fun at her relatively modest stature, even though she is two inches taller than the average American woman.

Harris confirmed her height earlier this year in an interview with “Today” host Katie Couric.

“I’m 5’4″ – sometimes 5’4,” Harris told Couric. “And with high heels – which I always wear – I’m 5’7, thank you very much.”

This is not the first time the Republican candidate has criticized Harris’ appearance or personality. These criticisms are often interpreted as subtle sexist attacks that he has previously directed at female opponents.

According to the New York Times, Harris did not comment on whether she had asked for some kind of ride.
