How should cell phone-free education be implemented throughout Virginia?

The debate over how best to implement cellphone-free instruction in Virginia’s elementary and secondary schools continues after Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order calling for limits or restrictions on cellphone use during school hours.

We’ve been working all summer to break down the responses of school districts in our region for you. Currently, most elementary and middle schools in our region require cell phones to be put away for the entire school day, except in emergencies or when a student has a doctor’s note. Most high schools allow cell phone use during lunch, between classes, and before and after school.

However, other schools take a stricter approach and require all grades (K-12) to put away their cell phones throughout the school day, even when there is no class in session.

We understand that both sides have weight. Some believe that a cell phone ban will have a positive impact on education, while others do not believe it is necessary.

What do you think? Should cell phones be banned completely, except in emergency situations? Or should they be allowed in the classroom?
