How Shōgun made Emmy Award history

At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Shogun continued to make history by receiving more Emmys than ever before for a single season of a television series. The series already made history by receiving 25 nominations, the most ever for a series in a single year.

FX’s historical drama won 14 awards (out of a possible 16) and is up for four more at next weekend’s Emmy Awards. The record was previously held by the 2008 limited series John Adams, which won 13 awards. The four awards that Shogun Still up for grabs are the awards for Best Drama, Best Actor (for Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Actress (Anna Sawai) and Best Supporting Actor (both Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira are nominated).

Among the winners last night was Néstor Carbonell, who won Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Rodrigues. “This is overwhelming,” said Carbonell Deadline after winning. “When you work as an actor for as long as I have, the role is a gift. Some years are good, some years you try to piece it together. You count your blessings when you’re working. That’s significant for me because my first job on television was as a guest star on law and order. So today a small circle closes. As soon as (the evening is over), I will board a plane to direct an episode of Law and order. This is incredibly meaningful to me.”

The 2024 Emmys will air this weekend, Sunday, September 15, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC.
