Horror Movies to Watch for Halloween 2024, Including “Terrifier 3”

It’s that time again: spinning chainsaws instead of Christmas carols, funny chocolate bars instead of gingerbread men and blood and guts instead of cookies and milk. Wait your turn, Santa Claus: Art the Clown, Stephen King vampires and those spooky “smile” grins provide all the good Halloween cheer.

October offers a whole host of horror films for those who enjoy scary movies during the spooky season, from streaming services to cinema screens. There’s something for every guy, girl and ghoul, no matter what your devilish tastes are. Crazy thrillers and survival killers, historical spooky films and culinary delicacies as well as a treasure trove full of blood and dismemberment. (See you, “Terrifier 3”!)

Here are 15 new horror movies to watch to best prepare for Halloween:

“Hold Your Breath” (stream now)

If a layer of dust at home scares you, you may not be prepared for this historic chiller. Sarah Paulson is an overprotective mother in Dust Bowl-era Oklahoma trying to protect her children from disease when a dark presence invades her homestead.

“House of Spoils” (stream now)

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose stars in this foodie folk horror film The Bear, playing an aspiring celebrity chef who opens her own restaurant. And because it’s a remote old place where a witch is said to have lived, our heroine has more than just food problems and an inexperienced sous chef to worry about when supernatural weirdness abounds are.

“Salem’s Lot” (stream now)

The horror story is a lean and mean adaptation of the 1975 Stephen King novel and stars Lewis Pullman as an author who returns to his hometown of Maine in search of new inspiration. He takes part in the search for a missing child, which leads to a huge discovery: the place is the starting point for a growing vampire plague.

“It’s What’s Inside” (Friday)

Horror is just one of many genres mixed in this body-swap thriller-comedy. The focus is on a group of college friends who meet for a pre-wedding reunion. One of them brings a suitcase that gives them all a new perspective on their relationships until the game goes completely wrong.

“Little Bites” (Friday)

Directed by Spider One (aka Rob Zombie’s younger brother), the fright-fest centers on a young widow (Krsy Fox) who protects her daughter by having her live with her grandmother, hidden from the flesh-eating creature that is slowly eating the body the mother devours.

Where to see: In cinemas and on demand.

“V/H/S/Beyond” (Friday)

The seventh installment in the sci-fi horror anthology series sparks a new round of found footage stories, including skydivers who come into conflict with a UFO, animal rights activists who make a gruesome discovery in a taxidermist’s home, and a woman the strange lights examines the Mojave Desert.

“Caddo Lake” (Oct. 10)

In this stunning thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, the lives of a grieving son (Dylan O’Brien) searching for truths about his dead mother and a woman (Eliza Scanlen) desperate to find her missing little sister intersect is a lake with a secret.

‘Mister. “Crocket” (Oct. 10)

In 1993, a mother (Jerrika Hinton) buys her son a VHS tape of a children’s show with an enigmatic Mister Rogers-type host (Elvis Nolasco). However, there is nothing friendly in Mr. Crocket’s neighborhood when the evil entertainer shows up on TV to kidnap children and slaughter their parents.

“Daddy’s Head” (Oct. 11)

A nightmare scenario occurs for young Isaac (Rupert Turnball). The boy is still grieving his father’s death and has to live with his widowed stepmother (Julia Brown). Worse still, a grotesque creature appears to haunt the boy, taking the form of his late father.

“Terrifier 3” (Oct. 11)

Five years after “Terrifer 2,” director Damien Leone returns in his next, gory film starring Lauren LaVera as Sienna, who is still struggling to rebuild her life when sadistic clown Art (David Howard Thornton) shows up to take Christmas with her another bloody series of murders.

“Smile 2” (Oct. 18)

In the sequel to the 2022 surprise horror hit, Naomi Scott plays an international pop star who feels the pressure of fame just as her world tour begins. So it’s pretty much the worst time for her, being haunted by her dark past, seeing strange visions and seeing people around her wearing creepy grins even though they shouldn’t be.

“Carved” (Oct. 21)

In the horror comedy, Peyton Elizabeth Lee plays a heartbroken teen playwright who visits a historical reenactment village on Halloween. The night becomes very real when she and others are attacked by a sentient, angry and extremely dangerous killer pumpkin.

“Don’t Move” (Oct. 25)

“Yellowstone” star Kelsey Asbille plays a woman seeking peace and solace in the forests of Big Sur when she is found by a serial killer who injects her with a paralyzing nerve agent. She only has 20 agonizing minutes before her body shuts down completely in a survival thriller produced by “Evil Dead” mastermind Sam Raimi.

“Your Monster” (Oct. 25)

Horror lover Melissa Barrera delves into a more romantic comedy of the genre with this film, playing a recently fired actress who finds a monster (Tommy Dewey) in her closet. But in Beauty and the Beast style, he turns out to be a charmer who encourages her to fulfill her dreams.

“Time Cut” (Oct. 30)

In the sci-fi slasher with a “Back to the Future” twist, Madison Bailey (“Outer Banks”) plays an inventive high school student who discovers a time machine and accidentally travels back to 2003. There she must stop a masked murderer from murdering her sister and also find a way not to change her own present.
