Hong Kong health groups are joining forces to raise awareness about shingles

The Hong Kong Pain Society has teamed up with Diabetes Hong Kong and Care For Your Heart to raise awareness of the risks of shingles with a promotional truck.

The six-week campaign, also known as “Ahead of Shingles,” runs until October 27 and is aimed at high-risk individuals and patients over 50, as well as those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease.

The campaign has invited local artists Stephy Tang and Pal Sin to become shingles health ambassadors. After launching the outdoor activation at a mall last year, the medical groups want to use the truck to engage with the community this year to raise public awareness about shingles.

The campaign was also launched based on alarming statistics that showed one in three Hong Kongers are at risk of developing shingles. Not only the elderly are susceptible to shingles, but also patients with long-term illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension, lupus erythematosus and cancer patients.

Using diabetes as an example, research shows that diabetics have a 78% higher risk of developing shingles than people without diabetes. In addition, some researchers have pointed out that about a quarter of diabetics have an increase in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels after birth, making the disease difficult to control.

The campaign used online and offline tools to reach target groups. Over the six weeks, the promotional truck will visit popular districts across Hong Kong, including Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, Shau Kei Wan and Tuen Mun.

This weekend, the truck will visit Tuen Mun Trend Plaza on Friday from 5pm, Yau Tong Ka Wing Street from 12pm to 8pm and Kennedy Town on Sunday.

To increase awareness of the truck, promotion was done across various media platforms prior to the event, which continued in the following weeks with multiple print and online media outlets as well as KOLs social media coverage. The campaign is carried out in collaboration with PRPPL Consultancy.
